On December 3, the Faculty of International Tourism and Management invited Dr. Ala Al-Hamarneh from Johannes Gutenberg-Universität
Mainz in Germany to present the seminar on "New Urban Tourism? Managing (over) Successful City Destinations" to students of FITM. The
seminar was held in Room A205 of the administration building of CityU. Dean of FITM Prof. Kevin Hannam attended the seminar.
Dr. Ala Al-Hamarneh introduced the concept and definition of urban tourism, explored the research framework and methods in this field, and shared and discussed the topic with students by taking Berlin for case analysis. During the seminar, students actively interacted with Dr. Ala
Al-Hamarneh and further discussed the development of urban tourism and other aspects with him.
Ala Al-Hamarneh holds a PhD in economic and social geography from Kiev State University. Since 1997 he has been affiliated with the
Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz in Germany as a senior researcher at the Center for Research on the Arab World (CERAW) and as an
assistant professor for human geography at the Institute of Geography. Issues of urban development, tourism, migration and higher
education are in the focus of his research, publications, consulting and teaching. Egypt, Tunisia, Jordan, Qatar and UAE as well as Germany,
Italy, Bulgaria and Ukraine represent the geographic areas of his research.
