In order to strengthen the quantitative statistical capabilities of graduate and doctoral students of the Faculty of International Tourism and
Management for them to successfully complete the statistical analysis of their dissertation, FITM organized the SPSS workshop for graduate
students in the autumn/winter program in January 2019. Students enthusiastically signed up and participated in the course. Due to the large
number of applicants, the course was held in two sessions, one in Chinese and the other in English. Each session totaled 30 hours, with a total of more than 80 attendees. FITM invited Dr. Li Yaoqi, Associate Professor from Sun Yat-sen University, and Dr. Peng Kang-lin Ken from
Minghsin University of Science and Technology as the instructors.
SPSS is not only an important tool for graduate students in their scientific research, but also an important method to cultivate their research
thinking and habits in scientific research as well as quantitative and empirical research.
The instructors first laid out the basic statistical principles of SPSS, and demonstrated the application of validity and reliability analysis,
descriptive analysis, T checksum and F-test, factor analysis, variance analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis and statistical analysis
through actual test data. Through the hands-on exercises, the students have all achieved excellent practice results, and were proactively
engaged in study. During the sessions, the teaching atmosphere was very active with intense interaction. Students said that they have
benefited a lot from the course, especially the scientific and pragmatic research attitude in SPSS statistical principles and application.
The application of statistics can guide graduate students to better carry out empirical researches.
